From lineal to circular model

With the Industrial Revolution, an economic model was established based on the extraction of raw materials, production, consumption and disposal of products, in other words, a Linear Economic Model. For many years it worked and boosted the country’s economy, but nowadays it has become unsustainable, especially if we think about safeguarding the survival of our planet.

As a result of the major problems that have emerged as a consequence of the previous model, people have started to raise awareness and look for other economic models, leading to the emergence of the Circular Economy.

According to The Circularity GAP Report 2022, a global measure of the Circular Economy that provides a comprehensive view of the economic systems analysed, only 8.6% of all waste was recycled in 2020, leaving a circularity gap of more than 90%.

The report also shows that in 2019, our society exceeded the limits of extraction and processing, consuming 100,000 tonnes of resources and generating the loss of 90% of biodiversity, according to Global Resources Outlook 2019.

Spain is progressing towards a more sustainable model through policies such as the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy “Spain Circular 2030” and its Action Plan 2021-2023, which establishes guidelines to promote a new model of sustainable production and consumption.

At Erum, this model and mindset change has long been practised, thanks to our desire to be visionary and look to the future, to be mindful of future generations, of the legacy we want to leave them both personally and environmentally, and of the impacts we have on the environment due to our activity.

Moreover, all this would not be possible without the right team of designers, engineers, environmental and operational recovery technicians, among others, who study, develop, implement and execute all those processes based on Circular Thinking.

Thanks to this type of business development, the idea of implementing a worldwide hanger classification system, the Return To Source System (RTS), was born.

Erum collects the hangers used by its customers and separates them into two streams: hangers for reuse (those that still meet the company’s standards) and hangers for recycling (those that can no longer fulfil their functions and are shredded to obtain raw material).

Collaborative circular economy: A new business challenge

At Erum we have developed a clear example of Collaborative Circular Economy, through the implementation of the RTS System together with the eco-design of the hangers. Our goal is to ensure that our products have a longer life cycle and that the company always has raw materials available for their production.

At Erum, our philosophy is based on the 7Rs: Redesign – Recover – Reuse – Repair – Recycle – Reduce – Rethink, which is necessary for the protection of our planet.
